Benefits of a Family Farm

Family farms have been disappearing over the years, with the number of dairy farms dropping more than 90% since 1970. There are many benefits to having a family farm, which we will take a look at here.

The Animals

A love for animals is a key factor for many who become farmers. Having the patience to care for your animals is important. Animals on family farms are well cared for and aren’t routinely injected with antibiotics as they are on commercial farms. Healthy, happy animals mean healthier meat and milk for consumers. If you love your animals, they’ll love you back.

Healthy Produce and Land

With family farms, you know where your food is coming from and what goes into it. For this reason, many people prefer to buy locally grown fruits and vegetables. Family farms don’t use a lot of harmful chemicals and are better for sustaining the soil. Low soil quality leads to a low quality of food.

Rising Population

Family farms greatly help the economy as well as the environment. Farmers feed the world; with the population constantly growing, more family farms mean more food to feed the masses.

Family on the Farm

On a family farm, you are your own boss. Hopefully you won’t ever fire yourself. You can also set your own hours, though you should keep in mind that you will need to set a schedule. Dairy animals are milked twice a day and it is best to stick to a schedule. You also don’t have to drive to work, which is a plus when the weather is bad. A farm is a family tradition that can be passed down from generation to generation. Farming is a great way to ensure strong work ethics. Helping with farm work gives children a sense of accomplishment. There is also something satisfying in growing one’s own food.

Nature

One the best parts of farming is being in nature. The scenery is beautiful, you get to watch the sun rise and set over the land. The air is a lot cleaner (though yes, occasionally smelly) and better for you. People who grow up on farms are much less likely to develop allergies and asthma. Out in the country, your neighbors aren’t too close to you. Noisy neighbors and the noises of town and city life are not a problem when you’re on a farm, it’s a lot more peaceful.
