Valentine’s Day and Farming: Protecting a Legacy and Labor of Love

Valentine’s Day is here and that means that love is in the air…

And as you celebrate the hearts that make yours skip a beat, don’t forget to celebrate the farm – that living, breathing, heart-beating thing that pulls you all together and gives you all a shared purpose that is so much bigger than yourself.

You may never send it roses or write a long letter about what it means to you… but you won’t need to. The farm knows that it matters because you treat it like it does. It, in return, takes care of you back. It supports you. It feeds you and it fills you to overflowing.

For these very reasons, the family farm is a legacy of love and a labor of it, too. It isn’t easy work, but it’s honest work and it is that honest day’s work that gives you that feeling that nothing else in the whole wide world can – that totally spent feeling, that feeling of contentment and putting your hopes and dreams into the ground… only to watch it spring forth bigger, brighter and greener than you remembered it last.

The beauty of the family farm is a beauty that we want to protect for generations to come. Think of it like a love letter, sown together with dirt, seeds, plow and sweat… and a whole lot of legacy in between. You want to see your farm flourish for those who will come after you. You don’t know them yet, but you love them already. They are the little people who will come from your little people and the little people after them. Protect the love you’ve worked so hard to build and let the legacy of love live on.
