It’s always exciting to welcome your adult children home again to the family farm. Yet, you can be certain that there will be some bumps along the road over the next several weeks. While adjusting back to the farm can take some work, it is reassuring to know that your child has learned a few things out in their big adventure in the world. As you open up your doors, use these tips to make sure everyone is prepared for the transition ahead.
Define Responsibilities
Even non-farm families struggle when adults come back home since everyone has to redefine their roles. Sit down with your child before they come back to the farm, and come to an agreement about what their responsibilities will involve. Will they work in the field? Or, would you prefer them to manage the books? Talking about your expectations now prevents trouble in the future days.
Keep An Open Mind
During your child’s time away, they have learned a few things that may be beneficial for your farm. Try not to hold them to the same skill set or even personality traits that they had when they left. Your shy child may have honed some leadership skills in their urban career that now makes them perfect for heading up a crew. Alternatively, your tough and tumble horse rider may now be better suited for negotiating deals with their slick sales tactics.
Review Everyone’s Adjustment
Once everyone has had a few weeks to give things a try, make sure to sit down again for a family meeting to see how it is working. Does your child feel like their skills are unappreciated? Or does your new crew seem to resent their involvement? Head off any disagreements now by adjusting your plan and keep working at it.
