Everyone loves the idea of marrying a hardworking farm guy or gal and settling down to raise a family. Unfortunately, the reality is far from what you’ll find in cliché romance movies. To get an idea of what life will really be like, here are six things you need to know before marrying into the farm.
6 Things to Know
- The farm will always have to come first – yes, even before you. The farm isn’t just a property. It’s a home, puts food on the table, and money in the bank.
- You’re committing to work hard for the rest of your life – or at least until your kids take over the farm in 20+ years. That means early mornings, late nights, no holidays or weekends off.
- It isn’t as easy as it looks. Sure, it doesn’t take a genius to spread some chicken feed on the ground, but there is so much more to it than that. As the new farm wife or husband you’ll need to learn everything your partner knows.
- It can be heartbreaking. You will lose livestock, and your harvest might end up getting eaten up by pestilence – no matter how much blood, sweat, and tears you’ve poured into it.
- It is stressful. If you want a happy farm relationship you’ll have to learn how to not take your frustrations out on your partner.
- Taking family vacations is (almost) impossible. The farm won’t run itself and leaving it for any extended period of time will be a definite no-go unless you have someone you can trust who knows what they are doing.
Operating a family farm can be rewarding, but it isn’t for everyone. Remember that when you marry a farmer, you’re also marrying the farm and everything that comes with it. For more information about running and operating a family farm contact us today.
