Reducing Tension on the Farm: Times When You Should Not Start A Discussion

Family farms can be filled with a lot of tension. Often, multiple relatives are working toward the goal of keeping the farm in the family. However, conflict may arise when they want to do so in different ways.

It takes some give and take, along with compromise and negotiation. One person cannot win an argument. You need to work together to find a balance that the whole family can live with.

Sometimes discussions can be quite heated and you have to take a break. Other times, you should not even start a discussion until the timing is right. Here are some reasons when you should wait to have your discussion. Nothing will get resolved in these situations.

  • When one (or all) of you are too tired to have a discussion. If you are not in the right mind to have a meaningful conversation, find another time to have a discussion.
  • If you are in a public place. Never start an argument when you are in a public place. Conduct all of your discussions that may get heated in the privacy of your own home.
  • When your children are around. Young children do not need to get involved so it is best to shelter them as much as you are able. Have discussions in rooms where your children won’t listen in. Save big conversations when they are not around.
  • When anyone is drunk. You can’t have any meaningful conversations when anyone is drunk. Conversations are more likely to get heated and violent. Also, when you are drunk, you lose the ability to think clearly. Because of this, you shouldn’t make any decisions when drinking is involved.

Everyone needs to be in the right state of mind and ready to talk before you start a discussion. They should also be in the privacy of your own home or farm, away from any small children.
